A 33-year-old Bulgarian resident was put under isolation care for atypical pneumonia in what Bulgarian Health Ministry announced on Thursday is the country's first suspected case of Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS).

The patient's medical sample has been sent to the World Health Organization (WHO) for SARS test and this is the first suspected case of the disease in Bulgaria adopted by the WHO, local media reported on Friday.

Symptoms similar to those of SARS were witnessed in the case of the patient, including high temperature, weakness and cough on April 19, the third day after he arrived in Bulgaria from a one-month stay in Canada.

The patient has not been conclusively diagnosed with SARS. He is currently isolated at the Sofia infectious diseases hospital and is being professionally treated for pneumonia.

SARS is a credible global risk and no country can be an exception, the Bulgarian Health Minister Bozhidar Finkov said.
