China will dispatch the fourth group of severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) inspection teams Saturday, which, along with the teams sent earlier, will supervise and assist in the prevention and treatment of the SARS epidemic across the country, said Vice-Premier Wu Yi Friday.
Addressing the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress, Wu said that Chinese local authorities and relevant departments have been ordered to strengthen anti-SARS work in line with the central government's requirements.
The State Council is requiring relevant departments to step up surveillance, reporting, monitoring and tracking of the disease. The inspection teams from the central government will cover 30 provinces, autonomous regions and municipalities throughout the country, Wu said.
China, highlighting the anti-SARS work in rural areas, will distribute needed commodities and materials and dispatch adequate human resources to the vast rural areas and the western regions.
Relevant departments have been ordered to enhance scientific research and cooperation with experts from Hong Kong, Taiwan, Macao and the World Health Organization to jointly resolve the global problem at an early date, she said.
Wu said China has drafted laws and regulations on emergency disease control, which are expected to be put in force in the near future. Relevant departments have also been required to ensure the supply and timely distribution of needed medicines, facilities and daily necessities. Any activities disturbing the market order will be harshly punished, Wu said.
