France 'Ready to Examine' NATO Role in Iraq

The French Foreign Ministry said on Thursday that France agreed to discuss with its NATO allies the issue of sending NATO troops to carry out missions in Iraq.

The French Foreign Ministry said on Thursday that France agreed to discuss with its NATO allies the issue of sending NATO troops to carry out missions in Iraq.

Paris was "ready to examine, with its allies, the issue of a possible role for NATO in Iraq," foreign ministry spokeswoman Cecile Pozzo di Borgo said.

It would be necessary to look at "the type of mission, the chain of command and the legal basis for the mission," she added.

She recalled that French Foreign Minister Dominique de Villepinhad told NATO colleagues in early April that his country would consider an alliance role in Iraq.

On April 16, France formally approved NATO's decision to lead apeace keeping mission in Afghanistan.
