WHO Experts to Stay One More Day in Shanghai

An experts team from the World Health Organization (WHO), who was scheduled to complete their four-day visit in Shanghai Thursday, will spend another day in Shanghai for inspection, a local government source said.

An experts team from the World Health Organization (WHO), who was scheduled to complete their four-day visit in Shanghai Thursday, will spend another day in Shanghai for inspection, a local government source said.

The WHO experts team, which arrived in Shanghai Monday for an inspection tour, is originally scheduled to end its inspection in Shanghai on Thursday.

It is learned that the experts would visit on Thursday morning the Shanghai Pulmonary Hospital, one of the city's four hospitals designated to receive patients infected with Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS).

The experts team comprises Dr. James Maguire, a prestigious expert from the American Diseases Control Center, WHO specialist Dr. Daniel Chin, Dr. Keiji Fukuda, Dr. Wolfgang Preiser, a distinguished German virology specialist, Li Ailan, a senior official with the project of the WHO representative office in China, and Xu Ruiheng, deputy director of the Diseases Prevention and Control Center in Guangdong province.

During their past three-day survey, they met with relevant municipal officials in Shanghai, and inspected local hospitals, disease prevention and control centers at the municipal and district levels, laboratories and community health work service centers.

Up to 15:00 on Wednesday, daily diagnosing reports from the municipal health departments noted, 16 people in Shanghai had beendiagnosed and confirmed as suspected SARS patients, including one Chinese American and one personality from Taiwan. The two SARS patients, who had already been diagnosed, are in stable condition.
