A Moscow man, suspected murderer of parliamentary Deputy Sergei Yushenkov, received a 48-hour detention on Wednesday, Interfax reported.

The 20-year-old suspect Alexei Stefanov may have killed Yushenkov last Thursday in vengeance for his father, the news agency quoted law enforcement sources as saying.

The detention was authorized by the Russia Prosecutor General'sOffice.

The suspect's father was arrested several years ago and spent six months in prison. He used to criticize Yushenkov in a letter, the sources revealed.

The young man was arrested at home.

An investigative source told Interfax that there are grounds tobelieve that the suspect disliked the murdered deputy. Moreover, both the suspect and his father allegedly suffer from a mental illness, which led to further thought on the case.

Yushenkov, a popular Duma deputy from the Liberal Russia party, was gunned down on April 17 near his apartment home in Moscow.

Russian Deputy Prosecutor General Vladimir Kolesnikov expressedhis belief that the murder "will be solved within an optimal period of time."

The investigation will be successful since "the appropriate forces, resources and professionals are being used." and "the individuals who ordered and perpetrated this crime will be named,"he said.

Kolesnikov did not rule out that the Yushenkov murder case may later be combined with the murder case of Vladimir Golovlyov, co-chairman of the Liberal Russia party, in August last year.

"If there are reasons for doing this, they may be combined," hesaid.
