The leader of Lebanese resistance guerrilla group Hezbollah (Party of God) has said the US occupation in Iraq will lead to resistance, the As Safir daily reported on Wednesday.

Secretary General of Hezbollah Hassan Nasrallah made the remarks in a speech to a crowd of people on Tuesday.

"The only option of the Arabs is to fight the US imperialism and colonialism," Nasrallah was quoted as saying. "American threats and occupation will not weaken our resolve or sway our belief."

He said he was confident that the Iraqi people will liberate their country from US and British occupation.

"They (Americans) talked a lot about liberation, freedom, democracy, reconstruction, free rule for Iraqis, claiming that Iraqi oil and resources are for the Iraqi people, but we must observe their actions," he said.

"The United States has tried to portray its war in Iraq as a war to liberate the people, especially Shiites, which is manipulated to instigate conflict and strife among Muslims," he said.

"Religious leaders in Iraq have not been fooled and have succeeded in confronting the danger," he said.

Nasrallah hinted that resistance against the US occupation in Iraq would soon be launched and would ultimately be successful, just as his group's resistance against an Israeli occupation in south Lebanon.

Israel withdrew its troops from south Lebanon in May, 2000, ending a 22-year occupation there.

Hezbollah, which spearheaded the resistance, is listed by Washington as an international terrorist group, an accusation rejected by the Lebanese government.

US troops thrust into the heart of the Iraqi capital of Baghdad on April 9, thus putting an end to Iraqi President Saddam Hussein's24-year rule.

Defying international opposition, the United States and Britain launched a war against Iraq on March 20 in a bid to topple Saddam.
