Cuba will bid for the 2012 summer Olympic Games, the Cuban Olympic Committee (COC) announced Tuesday.
The COC will hold a news conference next Monday to discuss its bid.
Committee president Jose Ramon Fernandez said earlier this month that the formal request to hold the 2012 Games in Havana would be submitted in May.
Fernandez said at the time that Cuba was capable of guaranteeing the success of the Olympics that are "organized so that the athletes rather than the sponsors are given priority."
New York, Madrid, and Leipzig, Germany are candidates, and Moscow, Paris, Lonon and either Rio de Janeiro or Sao Paulo are also likely to lodge official bids before the July deadline.
