Beijing Opens Special SARS Reporting Network

Beijing opened a special information network Tuesday on a trial basis for gathering information on severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS).

Beijing opened a special information network Tuesday on a trial basis for gathering information on severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS).

Liu Zejun, director of the Beijing Disease Control Center, saidthe network enables the city to gather statistics and other information about the disease in a timely way, since it links 25 special SARS reporting stations in the Chinese capital to the center.

The network will be officially operational on Wednesday as operators of the system were trained Tuesday.

Liu said Liu Qi, secretary of the Beijing Municipal Committee of the Chinese Communist Party, ordered departments to set up the network on Monday during his inspection of the center.

China at the weekend began to issue the latest developments of the SARS situation on the Chinese inland on a daily basis.
