No SARS Case Found During 1st Stage of Guangzhou Fair

The first stage of 93rd Guangzhou Fair lasting for six days closed on Monday, and fulfilled the export volume of USD 3.312 billion. During the fair no SARS case was found.

Xu Bin, vice secretary-general and the spokesman of the fair, said on Tuesday that hygiene and epidemic prevention work had naturally become the matter of utmost importance for the success of the Guangzhou Fair under the condition that SARS was not completely wiped out in Guangdong Province.

According to Mr. Xu, in order to ensure the safety of every person attending the fair, The relevant departments on the bases of rigorous measures taken for hygiene and epidemic control and the responsibility system at different levels, establishing a monitoring function on hygiene and epidemic prevention with the infirmaries of the hotels where foreign attendees lived, have scored a success in "finding early, reporting early, isolating early and curing early", and controlling the epidemic in as small a scale as possible.

The method such as keeping the circulation, strengthening the disinfection, of the air in exhibition halls and all public facilities, dispatching hygiene officials to supervise and control every sector of food producing and selling in exhibition halls and making regular physical checkups for the staffs of the fair and some other means were taken to guarantee the excellent hygiene conditions for the fair. Xu Bin said that the result no SARS case found in the first stage was difficult to be achieved.

As for the total export volume of USD 3.312 billion mechanical and machine products and textile and dress products took up the major part, occupying 57.6 percent and 24.3 percent respectively; the distribution of exported markets were relatively centralized, and the export to Asia, Europe and America accounting for 46 percent, 25 percent and 19 percent of the total respectively; the trade groups which had outstanding export achievement in this fair are mainly located in east China, among which the business volume of Guangdong, Zhejiang, Jiangsu and Shandong accounts for 60 percent of the total; the business volume of Chinese state-owned enterprises reached 2.51 billion USD, 76 percent of the total, and the radio of companies for foreign trade and manufacturing enterprises is 52 percent and 24 percent respectively.

Up to April 20, there were 16,423 businessmen attending the fair, and 5,653 of them were new attendees, accounting for 34.3 percent of the total attendees. Businessmen from HK, Taiwan, Nigeria, the United States and Pakistan were listed in the top 5 in order.
