The health authority in northwest China's Shaanxi Province on Monday reported its first imported case of severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS).
A 39-year-old woman was confirmed as having the disease on Sunday evening by experts in the provincial center for disease control and prevention. The patient was not identified.
A resident of the downtown area of Xi'an, capital of the province, the women was found to have a high fever and other symptoms of SARS and hospitalized immediately, said the source.
The province has taken measures to prevent the spread of the virus. Senior officials with the provincial government have asked government bodies at all levels in Shaanxi to be responsible for locating, controlling, treating and quarantining any case or suspected case.
