The Malaysian and Singapore authorities welcome any effort to standardize their procedures for dealing with Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) cases, Malaysia's Director of Diseases Control Shafie Ooyub said Monday.
He said standard operating procedures would help the two neighbors handle the matter more effectively.
"We will accept standard operating procedures (SOP) for both countries so that there are no surprises when a contingency happens," he was quoted by Bernama news agency as saying.
He was speaking to reporters after attending the Malaysia-Singapore bilateral technical meeting on SARS in Johor Baharu.
Singapore's 13-member delegation was led by its Commissioner ofImmigration and Checkpoint Authority, Lok Wai Han.
Shafie said Malaysian and Singapore officials had been working closely on the matter and he was confident that any differences would be ironed out amicably.
He said Monday's meeting, among others, touched on health checks and immigration issues and the proposals made would be submitted to the Health Ministry's Secretary General.
Meanwhile, Lok told reporters that Singapore was considering installing thermal imaging cameras at its land and sea checkpointsand introducing the health declaration card to better screen SARS-infected people.
Presently the cameras are only installed at the airport.
He said Malaysia was also looking into installing thermal imaging cameras, which are effective in diagnosing people with high fever, at its main checkpoints.
