Obasanjo Widens Leading Margin in Nigerian Presidential Election
Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo has widened his leading margin in the country's presidential election held Saturday, according to the latest vote counting results by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) here Sunday.

So far, Obasanjo, candidate of the ruling People's Democratic Party (PDP), has gained 8,312,684 votes, accounting for 73.45 percent of the 11,984,138 ballots that have been counted, said the INEC.
Muhammadu Buhari, candidate of the opposition All Nigeria People's Party (ANPP) and Obasanjo's major rival, got 2,427,286 ballots, or 21.45 percent of the counted votes.
Dim Chukwuemeka Odumegwu-Ojukwu from the All Progressives Grand Alliance got 223,680 votes, or 1.98 percent.
Over 60 million Nigerian voters had registered to cast their ballots across Africa's most populous country to elect their president and state governors.
During the voting day, both international and local observers as well as police forces and soldiers were present at the polling scene to safeguard the peaceful and smooth elections.
Some 20 political parties have had candidates standing in the presidential race.
On April 12, tens of millions of Nigerians went to the parliamentary polls to elect the 360-member House of Representatives and 109-member Senate. As many as 30 parties have put up their candidates in the contest.
According to the latest figures released by the INEC, the PDP has secured most of the seats in the parliament.
