WHO: China Makes 'Great Progress' in SARS Reporting

The World Health Organization (WHO) has noted the "great progress" China has made in reporting the SARS situation to the public, a WHO official said Sunday in Beijing.

The World Health Organization (WHO) has noted the "great progress" China has made in reporting the SARS situation to the public, a WHO official said Sunday in Beijing.

Junko Mitani, a press officer of WHO in China, told Xinhua that Chinese Vice-Health Minister Wang Longde met Sunday afternoon with WHO China Representative Henk Bekedam and presented to him the new figure of "probable cases" of severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) in China.

"These numbers represent increased efforts of the (Chinese) government to identify and report all probable and suspect cases of SARS in all hospitals and communities in China," she said.

WHO noted the great progress China has made, especially in having all hospitals, including military ones, report cases daily to the Ministry of Health, she said.

As of April 18, a total of 1,807 SARS cases, including 79 deaths, had been reported on the Chinese mainland, while 1,165 SARS patients had recovered and had been discharged from hospital, according to the ministry.
