The increase of reported severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) cases in Beijing does not mean deterioration of the epidemic situation, a senior health ministry official said Sunday.

Gao Qiang, executive vice-minister of health, said at a press conference that it was inaccurate to say the SARS situation was worsening in Beijing, because the newly reported cases were statistically omitted before, instead of newly infected ones.

The number of reported SARS cases in Beijing was 339, 302 more than it was announced five days ago. However, Gao said, this did not mean 302 people were infected in the past five days, They wereprobably hospitalized 10 or even 20 days ago but were counted.

Gao said the health ministry has sent out supervision teams to different places to ensure all figures of SARS cases are accurate.
