The Chinese government has been on high alert to prevent the possible spread of severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) in the rural area though there is no report of large number of SARS cases there, a senior health official said Sunday.
Gao Qiang, executive vice health minister, said at a press conference that there has been no report of SARS spread in China'svast rural areas, but the disease "is possible to be brought thereby the returned migrant workers."
The farmers have relatively poorer medical care, income and awareness of self-protection on SARS than the urban citizens, therefore, the spread of SARS might cause "serious consequences," he said.
The Chinese government has taken measures for SARS prevention and control, including those to ensure hygiene of all vehicles, toprovide equal medical service to rural laborers and urban residents, and give financial support to farmers who contract the disease, he said.
