Renowned Thai Chinese Shi Hian Chen was found murdered Friday afternoon in his room at the Hotel Lisboa, Macao's biggest casino, with his belongings worth 7 million patacas (843,000 US dollars) stolen, police said.
Chen was found bounded and dead by a hotel staff calling for room cleaning. One of his assistants, bounded and mouth-sealed, was not hurt.
On-the-spot investigations by police suggested that Chen was murdered in the morning by a male burglar armed with a knife. Police are making an all-out search for the murderer.
Chen, president of the Thai-Chinese Journalist Welfare Fund, was a tycoon of tourism and real estate business in Thailand. Born in 1932 in south China's Guangdong Province, he moved to Thailand as a teenager, where he established his career. He was a big donator to Chinese public causes including education, culture and disaster relief.
