Two severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) patients first detected in north China's Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region have recovered and will be discharged from hospital shortly, said a source with local health bureau on Friday.
The two girls, both above 20, were hospitalized on March 24-25 with symptoms of a fever and cough. They were immediately isolated and given timely treatment when suspected to have been infected by SARS, said Liu Shutao, deputy director of the autonomous regional health bureau, at a meeting on SARS control held in Hohhot Thursday evening.
On April 11, they were officially diagnosed as SARS patients by specialists from the Ministry of Health.
The condition of the two patients has now apparently improved and they are expected to be allowed to leave the hospital soon.
Four relatives of one of the girls were infected while looking after her in the hospital but their condition has been brought under control.
Since the discovery of SARS cases in the autonomous region, the regional health bureau has formed four expert teams to map out plans and direct the work to check the spread of the contagious disease in all leagues at the prefectural level and cities in Inner Mongolia.
A 100-member epidemic survey team has also been set up to keep a close watch on the epidemic situation in the autonomous region.
