Yao Ming to Play Asian Championships for China

Houston Rockets center Yao Ming will give up NBA's summer training and competition to take part inthe Asian basketball championships for China, reports said Friday in Shanghai.

Houston Rockets center Yao Ming will give up NBA's summer training and competition to take part inthe Asian basketball championships for China, reports said Friday in Shanghai.

Yao, who concluded his first season with Rockets on Thursday, is sure to put his country ahead of the club, which failed to qualify for the NBA playoffs after finishing ninth in the west conference.

"Yao will absolutely return to China once his is called up by the national team," Yao's agent Zhang Mingji told the Jiefang Daily.

China, who surrendered their Asian title to South Korea two years ago, will have to finish top two to qualify for the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens.
