Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak on Thursday met and held talks with visiting Syrian Foreign Minister Faruk al-Shareh over the regional situation, the official MENA news agency reported.
"The meeting dealt with the latest developments in the region, especially in Iraq and Palestine," Egyptian Foreign Minister Ahmed Maher said after the meeting.
Shareh, who is also Syrian deputy prime minister, arrived here this morning. He convoyed a letter from Syrian President Bashar Al Assad to Mubarak, which focused on the current Arab conditions.
Maher noted that the Mubarak-Shareh meeting showed that Egypt is standing with Syria, adding the two nations would cooperate for Arab interests and save Syria from any danger.
As for the Iraqi issue, Mubarak and Shareh agreed that Iraq should not be ruled by any foreign forces, and the peace and security of Iraq should be guaranteed, Maher said.
For his part, Shareh said his meeting with president Mubarak came within the context of the brotherly relations binding the two countries and their continued contacts.
Damascus maintains consultations with Egypt on the latest developments in the region topped by Iraq's occupation, he said, adding occupation is categorically rejected by the Iraqi people and days will prove the veracity of this saying.
The Arab countries are facing serious changes represented in the occupation of an Arab state namely Iraq and they should be more cohesive and determined to reject the status quo imposed on them, Shareh stressed.
Speaking of US threats against Syria, Shareh said such threats serve Israel which occupies others' lands by force.
On statements made by US Secretary of State Colin Powell in which he voiced intention to visit Syria, Shareh said showing good intentions, Syria welcomes this visit out of its belief that holding dialogue between the two countries is very important and is in the best interest of peace and stability in the Middle East.
