The Palestinian Authority on Wednesday demanded the release of Abul Abbas, a suspected mastermind of the Italian Achille Lauro ship hijacking in 1985.
Saeb Erekat, a Palestinian cabinet minister, said the arrest of Abbas by US forces in Iraq violated a US-backed agreement signed by Israel and the Palestinians in 1995.
Under the agreement, no Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO)officials would be arrested for acts of violence committed before the 1993 mutual recognition pact between Israel and the PLO, Erekat said.
Erekat also said that Abbas has visited the West Bank and Gaza Strip in recent years in coordination with Israel, which believes Abbas has renounced violence.
Abbas, leader of the Palestinian Liberation Front, a branch of PLO, has been taken into custody in Baghdad by the US troops.
In Qatar, the US Central Command said in a statement that Abbaswas arrested in a raid in southern Baghdad on Monday evening.
The statement said that his arrest removed "a portion of the terror network supported by Iraq and represents yet another victory in the global war on terrorism."
