The Pentagon said Wednesday that the Iraq war has so far cost the United States more than 20 billion US dollars.
"The war has cost in the region of about 20 billion (dollars) so far, actually over that," said Dov Zakheim, undersecretary of defense who is in charge of financial affairs.
In a breakdown of the cost, Zakheim said the money spent so far includes more than 10 billion dollars for military operations, 3 billion dollars for munitions and the rest for maintaining and supporting US military presence in the region.
He said that with the major battles having ended, the war is expected to cost about 2 billion dollars a month for the rest of the year.
"A rough estimate of the monthly costs of the war from here on out ... is approximately two billion dollars a month," the Pentagon official said.
As to the 62.5 billion dollar war budget approved by Congress earlier this month, Zakheim said he expects the funding "is going to go a very, very long way to the end of the fiscal year."
