Relatively affluent Chinese are increasingly purchasing flowers to decorate their homes or to brighten their friends' days.
China's flower industry has registered a 30 percent year-on-year increase in recent years, as indicated by the figures from the 2003 China International Flowers and Horticulture Exhibition which opened Wednesday in Shanghai.
The latest statistics indicate that China has over 250,000 hectares of flowers, with an annual production of 3.7 billion flowers. Annual sales reached 22 billion yuan (2.6 billion US dollars) in China, and exports valued at 100 million US dollars in2002.
Jiang Wei, director of the Chinese Florists Association, said the flower industry in China is developing fast. There are 20,000 flower shops around the country employing over two million people.
