United Nations Secretary-General Kofi Annan on Wednesday welcomed the planned Washington-Pyongyang talks in Beijing next week to discuss the months-long nuclear crisis on the Korean Peninsula.
Annan "welcomes reports on the forthcoming multilateral talks involving the United States, the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) and China in Beijing," UN spokeswoman Hua Jiang said in a statement.
"He is encouraged by what he hopes is the beginning of the process that would resolve diplomatically the current crisis on the Korean Peninsula," she said.
Annan and his personal envoy, Maurice Strong, "will continue tolend their full support to this process, while concentrating on humanitarian and longer-term development needs of the DPRK," she added.
US officials earlier confirmed reports that the United States had agreed to hold multilateral talks on the DPRK's nuclear issue as early as next week in the Chinese capital.
