German Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder and British Prime Minister Tony Blair agreed Tuesday that the United Nations must play a central role in the postwar reconstruction of Iraq.

Blair made an airport stopover in the northern city of Hannover, Schroeder's hometown, before heading for a European Union summit in Athens, Greece.

Schroeder made clear that Germany wishes the establishment of anew Iraqi government to take place under the aegis of the United Nations.

On his part, Blair was cautious, saying London wanted the United Nations to play a "key role."

Schroeder, whose government was strongly against the US-led Iraq war, expressed his welcome to the war's outcome.

"Every dictatorship that is defeated is a gain for the world. There can be debates over the how, but not over the result."
