Macao will seriously execute advises from the World Health Organization (WHO) to improve its preventive ability against the atypical pneumonia, said a senior official in charge of the prevention actions on Tuesday.

Chui Sai On, secretary of Social Affairs and Culture and also newly-appointed director in charge of the government task force onthe epidemic control, made the pledge after seeing off WHO representative Kouichi Morita, who had concluded his four-day consultation visit in Macao.

Morita will submit a report of his trip for the approval of WHO.The report will later be delivered to the Macao government as the WHO's advise.

Morita commented here Monday that the preventive measures takenby the Macao government against the Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) is quite effective. He said the government has been "very transparent and very open" in providing him with necessary data and information for his assessment on Macao's preparedness for SARS.

Morita's "oral suggestions" for Macao's preventive actions included advises in three aspects. The first, the Government Hospital should set up an independent area in the emergency rescue department to separate fevered patients according to clinical SARS diagnosis. Secondly, the ventilation system of isolation wards needs further improvement. Finally, the surveillance emplaced in the airport, ports, borders and hospital should be maintained and the isolation mechanism in hospitals in the case of suspected or confirmed SARS cases could still be improved.

Chui said that the Macao government will seriously study the assessment report, and take actions accordingly.

Morita on Monday confirmed that Macao's surveillance outcome claiming no case of SARS found in the region is reliable, and the government's preventive strategies and measures against SARS are completely in line with the WHO's guideline for the control of the disease in priority countries and regions.

Chui pledged that the task force will continue to make timely release of SARS infection information, while keeping a close contact with WHO, the Chinese Ministry of Health and health departments in neighboring Hong Kong and Guangdong Province. Should any SARS case be found in Macao, the task force will take a24-hour control immediately.
