Auto Imports Through Shanghai Double in First Quarter
Tariff reductions have resulted in the doubling of the volume of autos imported via the Shanghai port in the first quarter. A total of 3,424 units worth 109 million US dollars were imported during the three-month period, according to the Shanghai Customs.

Of the total imported autos, 96.8 percent had exhaust emission levels above 1500 cc.
Of the total, 78.4 percent of the imported autos were produced in Germany and Japan. German-made autos numbered 1,385, up 142 percent from the same period last year, while Japanese numbered 1,300, up 420 percent, according to the customs statistics.
In 2003, China lowered tariffs on car imports according to the following guidelines:
-- From 43.8 percent to 38.2 percent for cars with exhaust emissions of or below 3000 cc; and,
-- From 50.7 percent to 43 percent for cars with exhaust emissions above 3000 cc.
