Doctor Kouichi Morita, a representative from the World Health Organization, held a press conference on Monday afternoon in Macao. He presented his inspection on precautions taken by the Macao government to try to deal with SARS. He praised the government for its work so far.

During his visit in Macao, Dr Morita visited the isolation care units, emergency room, hospital intensive care units, the Center for Disease Control and Prevention and other medical facilities. He also talked with government officials, doctors and nurses.

Doctor Morita said it was still unclear how exactly the virus was spread, although SARS had been found in regions near Macao. But he said it was certain exposure to SARS sufferers and breathing in their flying particles of saliva or phlegm was one way of catching the disease. He said measures taken by the Macao government must have been effective because as yet there had been no case of SARS there. He suggested ports were supervised more strictly to keep the disease out.

While in Shanghai, a hospital has received eight overseas patients since April 2. Seven of them have been ruled out the possibility of getting SARS, and they left the hospital on Sunday.
