S.Lankan Tamil Rebels Threaten to Boycott Tokyo Donor Conference

Sri Lankan Tamil Tiger rebels have said they would review their decision to participate in the international donor conference due in Tokyo of Japan in June in protest over their exclusion from the preliminary conference to beheld in Washington on Monday.

In a statement issued on Saturday from its headquarters in northern town of Kilinochchi, which was made available on Sunday, the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) said that the deliberate exclusion of the rebels from discussions on critical matters affecting the economic and social welfare of the Tamil "nation" is a "grave breach of good faith."

The rebels said that the exclusion has severely undermined their trust and confidence in Sri Lanka government's intentions.

"... it is only fair and just that the authentic representatives of the Tamil people should have been invited to this major international conference to articulate the interests and aspirations of our people," said the statement.

The LTTE rebels also criticized the Sri Lankan military for itscontinued occupation of Tamil homes, schools, places of worship and other public buildings "in violation of both the ceasefire agreement of February 2002 and subsequent agreements reached at the negotiating table."

The rebels called for the full implementation of the ceasefire agreement as well as the implementation of agreements pertaining to resettlement of refugees and internal displaced persons in the north and east.

The government expects to garner large amount of aid from international donors during the Tokyo donor conference which is tobe held on June 9 and 10.
