According to Kyodo News, the police confirmed both of them wereemployees of the fireworks factory, Nangoku Fireworks Co. in Kagoshima City.
The police began a full-scale investigation earlier Saturday into the explosion which killed seven workers at Nangoku Fireworksinstantly and injured four other people, including nearby residents.
The death toll of nine makes the explosion the worst fatal accident at a Japanese fireworks factory in 23 years, according tothe news agency.
In 1990, seven people were killed in a similar explosion in central Japan's Aichi Prefecture.
The latest blast occurred around 1330 local time (0430 GMT) Friday, Kyodo said, adding that 25 buildings were burned down in the fire, which was put out within about 25 minutes.
Nangoku Fireworks had about 20 employees and specializes in manufacturing large fireworks for events and festivals.
