DPRK Reiterates Readiness for Direct Talks with US
The Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) will not stick to any particular dialogueformat for settlement of the nuclear issue if the United States drops its anti-DPRK policy, a DPRK Foreign Ministry spokesman said on Saturday.
The Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) will not stick to any particular dialogueformat for settlement of the nuclear issue if the United States drops its anti-DPRK policy, a DPRK Foreign Ministry spokesman said on Saturday.
"If the US is ready to make a bold switchover in its Korea policy for a settlement of the nuclear issue, the DPRK will not stick to any particular dialogue format," the spokesman said in response to a question raised by the Korean Central News Agency (KCNA).
"The DPRK's call for direct talks is aimed to confirm whether the US has a political willingness to drop its hostile policy toward the DPRK or not," he added.
It is possible to solve the issue if the US approaches the dialogue sincerely, he said.
The spokesman reiterated Pyongyang's opposition to internationalize the nuclear issue as the DPRK is not a signotory to the Non-Proliferation Treaty.
The UN Security Council held discussions Wednesday on the DPRK' s nuclear issue without any substantial outcome or resolution.
The nuclear issue over DPRK erupted in October last year when the United State claimed that the DPRK was secretly developing a uranium enrichment program and stopped its heavy oil supplies to the DPRK in November.
Pyongyang announced its withdrawal from the nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty on Jan. 10, but said it had no intention to develop nuclear weapons.
