Chinese Women in Rural Areas Learn to Select Best Contraceptive

"I'm so glad I could choose a suitable contraceptive for myself," said He Xuehua, a woman livingin southwestern China's Chongqing.

"I'm so glad I could choose a suitable contraceptive for myself," said He Xuehua, a woman livingin southwestern China's Chongqing.

He's hometown of Rong Chang County carried out the "knowing before selecting" campaign for birth control two years ago.

She learned diverse ways of contraception from the campaign andeventually selected the most suitable one for herself thanks to the advice of experts and family planning personnel.

According to the experts, different women show different adaptability to the same contraceptive because of their different physical conditions.

But in the past, women living in southwestern China's rural area knew little about birth control and couldn't select suitable contraceptives because of a sluggish economic condition.

"I was easily sweaty and always felt uncomfortable in the past when I took a contraceptive suppository," said He. "I feel better since I selected a prophylactic."

"The women become more healthy and live happier lives than before while gaining enough knowledge about birth control," said Wen Yonggao, director of the Family Planning Committee in Chongqing.

According to Wen, the campaign turns family planning work into a service and helps respect local women's desire to protect their privacy.

China started promoting family planning in the 1970s to slow down its rapid population growth.
