Pakistan's departments concerned have established measures to contain possible spread of the deadly Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS), although there have not as yet been known cases of the disease in the country, a health official said here Friday.
"We have issued detailed instructions and information about thedisease to all the health authorities of airports and seaports andare watching the situation closely," the Associated Press of Pakistan quoted Kakar Saeed Dil, executive director of the National Institute of Health (NIH), as saying.
Dil, who coordinates the efforts to keep the deadly virus out of the country, added that the relevant departments had been askedto provide quarantine to check and clean facilities at the airports. These authorities have in turn informed airlines management that are checking people for symptoms on flights.
Faizullah Kakar, an epidemiologist with the World Health Organization, said that the agency was backing the Pakistani government's efforts to keep the infection out of the South Asian country with a population of 140 million.
"I am more concerned about the Pakistanis who are already in the countries where the SARS infection is raging, and they are travelling here by air," he said.
