The Hong Kong Special Administrative Region government proposes to construct a new dual two-lane checkpoint bridge beside the existing Lok Ma Chau checkpoint bridge to meet the growth in the cross check point traffic between Lok Ma Chau and Huanggang.

A spokesman for the Environment, Transport and Works Bureau said Friday that the government plans to begin construction works in the last quarter of 2003 and would endeavor to complete the works by the end of 2004.

Lok Ma Chau checkpoint is in Kong Kong's New Territories with an average daily passenger flow of about 40,000 and Huanggang checkpoint is located at the southern part of Shenzhen Special Economic Zone, Guangdong Province.

Hong Kong and Guangdong started 24-hour passenger clearance service at the Lok Ma Chau/Huanggang checkpoint in late January.
