A severe cold front is due to hit northwest China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region on April 14 as cold air moves in from Siberia, said a weather forecast released Friday by the local meteorological station.
From April 14 to 17, the minimum temperature will drop 15 Celsius degrees in the north of Xinjiang and 12 degrees in the south. In the regional capital of Urumqi, the lowest temperature will reach -5 degrees, said Xiao Kaiti, chief weather forecaster.
Rainy and snowy days with a strong breeze are likely to appear in the area. A sandstorm will probably hit the southern part.
Because to the cold wave, cotton planting has been postponed inthe north of the region and frostbite-prevention work is being implemented in the south where cotton has already been planted, according to the local agricultural department.
