One of the witnesses, who owned a house in the area, said he saw US soldiers carrying the uniforms and remnants of the three dead Marines.
Three US Marines and many local residents were killed in the operation, they said.
The depot, located in Oteifia, on the western side of the Tigris River, had a large number of missiles and heavy weapons inside, they said.
The missiles and other weapons caused a huge explosion that shuttered windows, doors, and houses at least half a kilometers away, said one of the witnesses, who owned a houses in the area.
Twenty houses were destroyed in the explosion, he said. The witness said he was lucky enough to have moved his family to another area, but his house was completely destructed.
One of the missiles exploded not from the site of depot, killing at least three US marines, he said.
The witness said when he went to see his house Friday morning, he saw US soldiers carrying the uniforms and remnants of the three dead Marines, and one of his neighbors told him that he had taken a picture of the scene.
He said people living in the area had suggested the US forces not destroy the missiles, but their advice was turned down.
