An eighth suspected case of severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) has been reported in New York City, local media reported Thursday.
The latest patient, a 22-year-old man is in a local hospital. The man, who is not a local resident, is reportedly doing fine and will be released soon.
He had recently traveled to Asia, where the disease began spreading, Greg Butler of the city Health Department was quoted assaying.
All of the suspected SARS victims in the city have traveled to Southeast Asia, he said.
There had been rumors that the mysterious disease was spreading in Chinatown and other neighborhood inhabited by Asian Americans, causing a business slump in these communities which rely heavily on tourism and service trade.
Some prominent figures, including Senator Hillary Clinton, held press conferences over the past days to tell the public that no SARS cases have been found in communities inhabited by ethnic Chinese groups and urged New Yorkers to go shopping there as usual.
