Beijing handled a record 12.61 billion US dollars worth of exports in 2002, a rise of 7.2 percent from 2001.
The figure released here Wednesday at a meeting on imports and exports means the Chinese capital has maintained its position as the seventh biggest exporter nationwide for four consecutive years.
Exports of machinery and electronic products reached 3.75 billion dollars in 2002, rising 28 percent from the 2001 level andaccounting for 64 percent of its total exports, compared with 31 percent in 1996.
Software exports of Beijing held one third of the nation's total, or 93.14 million dollars.
Exports by private businesses in 2002 topped 64 million dollars,4.2 times the figure a year ago.
The number of enterprises each with 100 million dollars or more of exports reached eight in 2002, three more than the 2001 figure.
Exports of textiles and garments went down 2.9 percent year-on-year to 840 million dollars in 2002 as the sector decreases in importance for local exports.
