The temporary ship lock at the Three Gorges Dam construction site in central China's
Hubei
province was permanently closed at 23:48 Wednesday.
According to officials with the Yangtze River Three Gorges Project Development Corporation (YRTGPDC), the lock, which has operated for the past five years, will be rebuilt into a facility to wash silt and a permanent ship lock will be put into operation on June 15, according to the YRTGPDC sources.
Statistics indicate that during the past five years, 47,657 ships as well as 12.65 million tons of cargo and 660,000 passengers passed through the lock.
When the Yangtze River was divided in 1997 for the Three GorgesDam project, the lock and a diversion cannel became the main watercourse for ships.
Construction on the Three Gorges Project began in 1993 and is expected to be completed in 2009, when 26 power generating units with a combined capacity of 18.2 million kilowatts will go into operation.
