Russian Foreign Ministry spokesman Alexander Yakovenko categorically denied on Wednesday media reports alleging that Iraqi President Saddam Hussein has taken refuge at the Russian Embassy in Baghdad.

"These statements do not correspond to reality at all," Yakovenko said in an interview with Russia's Channel One television station.

According to earlier reports circulated by some Western and Arab media outlets, Hussein was said to have hidden at the Russian embassy in Baghdad.

Yakovenko noted that the spread of such information puts the security of the Russian Embassy at risk.

"Any hostile actions against our embassy will be regarded as a gross violation of the convention of diplomatic privileges and immunity, as well as our agreements with the fighting sides," he warned.

He also reaffirmed Russia's demand for comprehensive clarifications from the anti-Iraq coalition's command over Sunday's attack on a Russian diplomatic convoy in Iraq, adding that Russia retains the right to seek compensation for material and moral damages inflicted as a result of the incident.
