Chinese Leaders Bid Farewell to Former Minister

The body of Zhou Zijian, a veteran of the Communist Party of China (CPC), was cremated Wednesday in Beijing.

The body of Zhou Zijian, a veteran of the Communist Party of China (CPC), was cremated Wednesday in Beijing.

Zhou died of illness in Beijing on March 24 at the age of 89.

Chinese leaders Jiang Zemin, Wu Bangguo, Zeng Qinghong, Huang Ju and Luo Gan and other senior officials paid their respects to the deceased Wednesday morning at the Babaoshan Cemetery for Revolutionaries.

Communist Party and state leaders Hu Jintao, Wen Jiabao, Jia Qinglin, Wu Guanzheng and Li Changchun and other senior officials had given condolences to Zhou's relatives after he died.

Zhou, a native of Anhui Province in east China, joined the CPC in 1936. He had been minister of No.1 machine-building industry, former governor of Anhui, a member of the 12th Central Committee of the CPC and a member of the committee's Advisory Committee.
