Vietnam's tourism sector is now in serious crisis due to the Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS)spreading in the country, local Youth newspaper said Wednesday.
Many foreign visitors have canceled their tours of Vietnam. Occupational rate in hotels in March went down to 40-50 percent, compared to the rate of 95-98 percent a few months ago.
The newspaper quoted Vu The Binh, head of the Tourism Department, as saying that the rate is expected to sharply decrease in April. The most serious affected cities are Ho Chi Minh City and the capital of Hanoi.
Vietnam received 712,500 foreign visitors in the first quarter of this year, a year-on-year rise of 11.5 percent.
However, local tourism experts forecast that it is difficult to fulfill the country's target of 2.8 million foreign arrivals and atourism turnover of 25 trillion Vietnamese dong (1.63 billion US dollars) in 2003.
