South Korean Prime Minister Goh Kun on Tuesday opposed a "special countermeasure" on the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) when the international community is making diplomatic efforts to solve the DPRK nuclear issue.

Goh made the remarks in a reply to inquiry of the South Korean National Assembly on Tuesday, reported the national news agency Yonhap News.

South Korea and the United States share the stance that both countries would provide security guarantee and economic aids to the DPRK on condition that the latter scraps its nuclear program, he stressed.

In the mean time, South Korean Foreign and Trade Minister Yoon Young-Kwan said Tuesday that the most important is to prevent the situation involving the nuclear issue from deterioration.

The DPRK nuclear issue should be dealt with through dialogue, instead of sanctions, the minister also reiterated his government stance in the parliament inquiry.

The comments came on the eve of a meeting of the United NationsSecurity Council on the nuclear standoff on the Korean Peninsula slated for Wednesday.

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) referred the DPRKnuclear issue to the Security Council on Feb.12 and adopted a resolution urging the DPRK, which declared pullout from the nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty in January, to comply with its commitment to the international community.
