Key Politician in Nigeria Killed by Armed Robbers: Police Chief
The Nigerian police announced on Tuesday that the killing of former All Nigeria People's Party (ANPP) chieftain Harry Marshall was purely an armed robbery, not a politically motivated assassination.
The Nigerian police announced on Tuesday that the killing of former All Nigeria People's Party (ANPP) chieftain Harry Marshall was purely an armed robbery, not a politically motivated assassination.
Parading six suspects in the capital Abuja, Inspector-General of Police Tafa Balogun said the armed gang went to the deceased house in Abuja with the intention of robbing him of the sum of 20 million naira (about 157,500 US dollars).
The police chief said they shot Marshall when they failed to find the money which was to be used in preparation of the then ANPP convention in Port Harcourt.
The late Harry Marshall, a key figure of the ANPP, a strong political party challenging the ruling People's Democratic Party, was shot dead at his Abuja home on March 5. His death then raised political tensions across the country one month ahead of the general elections.
Balogun said Sunny Okoku who allegedly shot the late politicianwas arrested in the southern state of Edo and would soon be brought to Abuja.
Three women alleged to be "criminal receivers," who sold the jewels stolen from Marshal's house during the operation, were alsoparaded along with the six suspects.
The police chief, therefore, dismissed insinuations that the murder of the late ANPP stalwart was politically motivated, pointing out that the facts available indicated that the motive was purely armed robbery.
