Beijing Olympic organizers will launch a worldwide five-year project to seek the theme song for the 2008 Olympic Games, an official with the Beijing Organizing Committee (BOCOG) said Tuesday.

"From April, 2003 till 2007, 10 songs will be selected each year as 'Olympic songs'," said Sun Weijia, deputy director of BOCOG's Media & Communications Department.

"By 2008, the theme song for the Beijing Games will be picked out from these 50 Olympic songs."

The theme song should not only reflect the Chinese culture and the Olympic spirit, but also gain popularity with people all over the world, said Sun.

According to BOCOG, this year's deadline for submission is August 31. Selection procedure will start in September.

The official Olympic anthem was introduced at the 55th IOC session held in Tokyo, Japan, in 1958. It is usually played at the opening ceremony of each Olympic Games when the Olympic flag is hoisted.

Each host country or city would create an Olympic theme song to best reflect their unique culture and pursuit of the Olympic spirit.
