Iraqi Ambassador to Russia Abbas Khalaf said Monday that it was US troops that shot at a convoy of Russian diplomats evacuating from Iraq to Syria on Sunday, Itar-Tass reported.
"Fire was opened on a column from the American side," Khalaf said, citing "witnesses statements."
The convoy of 23 Russian diplomats and journalists came under fire Sunday. Five people were injured.
"The incident happened 60 kilometers west of the Iraqi capital," Khalaf said.
"The Russian diplomats came under fire although American command had been informed about the route of movement," the envoy stressed, adding that "the American side has not given any official explanations in this regard so far."
Iraqi soldiers accompanied the wounded to hospital after the incident, he said.
