Russian President Vladimir Putin and his French counterpart Jacques Chirac Saturday held a phone conversation on the ongoing Iraq war, the Kremlin press service announced in a statement.

The two heads of state agreed that the United Nations must be respected and should play a leading role in both alleviating Iraq's aggravated humanitarian crisis and rebuilding the country in post-war era, the statement said.

Putin and Chirac vowed that peace and stability in the Middle East region must be restored, it said.

The two presidents were also satisfied with the results of the just-concluded meeting in Paris attended by Russian, French and German foreign ministers, the statement added.

At the meeting on Friday, the three staunchest opponents to the US invasion of Iraq, raised their joint concern about a humanitarian emergency in Iraq and called for an early role for the UN in running a post-conflict Iraq.
