US and Iraqi forces clashed late Friday for the control of Saddam International Airport, according to CNN.

Iraqi resistance forces exchanged fire around Saddam International Airport with US troops, which claimed earlier in the day to have taken the airport 20 km away from Baghdad.

Iraqi Fedayeen paramilitary forces loyal to President Saddam Hussein move to the airport, CNN said in an earlier report.

Iraqi Information Minister Mohammad Said al-Sahaf told a press briefing that the Iraqi forces would carry out "unconventional actions" Friday night against the "invaders" at the Baghdad airport.

"The mercenaries were locked up in the small and isolated island. They have lost contact with the main forces around the airport," Sahaf said. "Tonight, I don't see if there is any chance for them to survive."

Hundreds of US troops were also reported to be heading for the airport apparently in reinforcement.
