Shandong Improves Environment for Development

East China's Shandong Province, one of China's leading economic areas, has removed bottlenecks to its economic growth and greatly improved its environment for development over the past five years.

East China's Shandong Province, one of China's leading economic areas, has removed bottlenecks to its economic growth and greatly improved its environment for development over the past five years.

Shandong invested more than 1.3 trillion yuan (158 billion US dollars) in fixed assets during the period, surpassing the combined figure for the two decades from 1978 to 1997, with the amount in 2002 alone reaching 351 billion yuan (42 billion dollars), said Han Yuqun, governor of Shandong, at a recent meeting of theprovincial people's congress.

The total sum used in the past five years included 409.9 billion yuan (49 billion dollars) in basic construction projects, 14,000 of which have been completed, and 353.9 billion yuan (42 billion dollars) in technology-innovation items, 18,000 of which have been completed.

Roads open for traffic reached 74,000 km in total length in theprovince by the end of 2002, with expressways rising by nearly 2,000 km to 2,411 km.

Local railway lines had reached 2,709 km by 2002, with transport volume of passengers and cargo increasing by 21 percent and 31 percent respectively from 1997.

Local ports' handling capacities had risen to 220 million tons a year.

Eighty-two new air routes were opened in the five years, bringing 301 new flights.

The number of mobile phone users topped 29 million in Shandong at the end of 2002,

Shandong's installed capacity to generate electricity reached 25 million kilowatts last year, 8.65 million kilowatts more than in 1997, and the province's coal output hit 130.67 million tons, an increase of 39.7 million tons over 1997.
