One US soldier was killed and several others were injured in a possible friendly fire accident involving a US F-15E Strike Eagle and coalition ground forces, the US Central Command said on Thursday.

In a statement, the Central Command said that it has begun investigation into the incident.

"One US Army soldier is dead and several others are reported injured or missing in connection with the incident," said the statement.

No further details of the incident are available at the moment.

Since the Iraq war broke out on March 20, friendly fire has been bothering the US-led coalition forces.

Among the 27 British soldiers who died in the war so far, most of them have been killed in accidents or in "friendly fire." Onlyfive have been killed in action.

On the US side, dozens of soldiers have been injured by their own forces, and the military is still investigating the combat deaths of nine Marines near Nasiriyah on March 23, which could be a potential case of friendly fire.

During the 1991 Gulf War, 148 US troops were killed, with 36 of them killed by their own forces.
