Newly-appointed Palestinian Prime Minister Mahmoud Abbas, better known as Abu Mazen, is likely to present the list of a new cabinet on Saturday, Palestinian officials said.
Newly-appointed Palestinian Prime Minister Mahmoud Abbas, better known as Abu Mazen, is likely to present the list of a new cabinet on Saturday, Palestinian officials said.
The sources, who spoke in condition of anonymity, said Abu Mazenwill meet on Thursday with members of the Palestinian Central Council (PCC) of the mainstream Fatah Movement led by Yasser Arafat, to select members for the cabinet.
The sources said the cabinet formed under Abu Mazen would consist of 80 percent of Fatah Movement members according to the Oslo Accord signed in 1993.
Palestinian Democratic Union FEDA, and the Popular Party and Popular Struggle Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PSFLP) nominated their members to join the cabinet earlier this week.
Zuheir Kamal will represent FEDA, Ghassan Al-Khatib for the People's Party and Ahmad Majlani for the PSFLP in the cabinet.
Yasser Abed Rabbo from FEDA and Samir Ghusha from PSFLP will be out of the cabinet.
Abu Mazen was formally assigned as the first Palestinian prime minster two weeks ago by Arafat and was approved by the PalestinianLegislative Council (PLC).
Since his appointment, he has been engaged in talks with different Palestinian factions, including the Islamic Resistance Movement (Hamas) and Islamic Jihad (Holy War) about the forming of a unity government.
The two radical groups have rejected to join the cabinet.
The Palestinian National Authority hopes that the cabinetmaking will accelerate the implementation of the peace roadmap as promisedby US President George W. Bush, which envisions a two-state resolution.
